27 people were shot in the city of Chicago, Illinois over Christmas weekend, meaning the city’s homicide rate has now increased by more than 50% since last year.
Daily Mail reported that seven of the victims were shot fatally, bringing the total number of homicides this year to 745. This is up 56% from last year’s total of 476.
The victims this past weekend included an 18 year-old male who was fatally shot in the neck and back while he was driving at 1.30am on Sunday on the city’s Southwest Side. No suspects have been arrested for his murder at this time.
The Chicago Tribune reported that this is the first time in almost 20 years that over 700 homicides have been reported in Chicago in a single year. The number of shooting victims in 2016 in the midwestern city currently stands at 4,252, up 47% from 2,884 at the same time in 2015.
These shootings continue to plague Chicago despite the fact that the city has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. What do you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
